With the Bureau of Labor Statistics reporting that positions in human resource management are expected to grow by 9 percent over the next ten years, a degree in the field could be beneficial to someone who enjoys working with and helping others succeed in the workforce.

The field of human resources deals with the human aspect of a company, focusing not only on recruitment hiring and retention but also acting as a liaison between management and employees. They also engage in counseling and social work duties as they work with employees to help them improve in the workplace while dealing with what can be difficult personal issues. The University of Scranton offers both undergraduate and graduate degree programs in human resources.


The Bachelor in Human Resource Studies degree at the University of Scranton integrates knowledge from human resources, social and behavioral sciences, business and liberal arts to create professionals who can assist in shaping corporate policy. The program teaches students to handle all aspects of human resources, including recruitment, employee relations, payroll, benefits, training, and administration. The program is available online, on-campus or in a hybrid version. Students learn to make judgments that impact operations and employee relations as well as how to collaborate on teams in order to develop positive working relationships. They gain leadership and organizational skills as well. All courses are taught using a Jesuit philosophy. The program requires 127 credit hours with 37 credits earned in HR specific courses. They must complete a portfolio that documents student outcomes and a 120-hour internship is required. Courses required may include:

The Master of Science in Human Resources is designed for those who wish to move into leadership roles in the field. The program provides information on practical issues in the workplace, including ways to use staffing as a strategy in organizational development. The program is taught using a Jesuit perspective which focuses on developing the whole person. Students gain an understanding of cultural diversity as well as how human resources impacts the entire workplace. About University of Scranton

In 1888, Most Reverend William G. O’Hara, D.D., blessed a block of granite to be used as the cornerstone for Saint Thomas College, an institute of higher learning that had been his dream for many years. Initially, the faculty consisted of diocesan priests and seminarians until the Xaverian Brothers took over operation of the school in 1896. They only operated the school for one year before the Christian Brothers took control.

In 1938, the school was renamed University of Scranton and, in 1942, a group of 19 Jesuits arrived to take over, led by Most Reverend William Havey, D.D. The Jesuits completely restructured the school, focusing on liberal arts which was a foundation of the Jesuit education. The Jesuit leadership created a school that was more comprehensive, moving it away from its reputation as a commuter school.

U.S. News & World Report has ranked the University of Scranton as one of the Best Colleges as well as one of the Best Colleges for Veterans. The Princeton Review has also ranked the school as one of the best colleges as well as in the top 20 for best food, best dorms, most students engaged in community service and most religious students. Forbes Magazine consistently ranks the university as one of America’s Top Colleges.

University of Scranton Accreditation Details

Regionally accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education, the University of Scranton provides students with the highest quality education possible based on criteria set forth by the Commission. The school undergoes periodic review to confirm they continue to meet those criteria and agrees to address any areas that are identified as needing improvement. University of Scranton Application Requirements

Freshman students must complete the Common Application and submit official high school transcripts. They must provide official ACT or SAT scores as well as letters of recommendation. A list of extracurricular activities is also required.

Transfer applicants must also complete the Common Application and provide official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended. If they have 30 or fewer transfer credits, they must also provide official high school transcripts along with official ACT or SAT scores. They must provide a letter of recommendation, a personal statement and a Dean of Students Certification Recommendation Form from each college and university attended.

In order to apply to the Master of Science in Human Resources, students must complete an online application and the Transfer of Credit Policy Form. They must provide a professional resume, statement of intent and three letters of reference. They must hold a bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited college or university.

The University of Scranton Tuition and Financial Aid

Full-time undergraduate tuition at the University of Scranton is $45,390 and part-time tuition is $1,164 per credit hour. Graduate student tuition is $965 per credit hour for on-campus programs and $510 per credit hour online.

Financial aid is available in the form of scholarships, grants, loans, and work-study. The University of Scranton accepts VA benefits and employer-funded tuition as well. Students must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) in order to qualify for any assistance. Students have received more than $30 million in financial aid with over $20 million provided by the university. Of the first-year students enrolled that year, 95 percent were offered funding from need-based grants and scholarships. The average financial aid package, not including parent and private loans, was $30,650.
