About Oklahoma Christian University

Oklahoma Christian University is a private university affiliated with the Church of Christ. Founded in 1950 as Central Christian College, it took over the estate of Henry Vernon Foster who made his money in the oil industry. Located in the small town of Bartlesville, Oklahoma, the college quickly outgrew its first campus and began looking for a new location in Oklahoma, eventually settling on Oklahoma City. Construction began in 1958, and the more than 200-acre campus opened for business the following year. That moved helped the college establish its first bachelor’s degree programs and led to the college becoming Oklahoma Christian College. After earning regional accreditation and making curriculum changes, the college became the Oklahoma Christian University of Science and Arts, but it would shorten this name to just Oklahoma Christian University.

Also called OCU, the university was one of the nation’s first campuses to add free WiFi for students and faculty to use both in and out of their classes. It also adopted a new policy that gave each incoming a student a new laptop to use. OCU changed its policy to give students access to Apple computers and laptops and eventually gave them the option of choosing an iPad too. The university now gives students the choice between buying a computer or device or bringing their own from home. All of the more than 2,000 students enrolled in OCU must agree to follow the guiding principles established by the university and to attend religious services.
