About Huntington University

Huntington University opened in 1897 as Central College after the Church of the United Brethren approved an institute of higher learning in Huntington, Indiana. The decision to open the school came after the closure of Hartsville College. United Brethren Bishop Milton Wright, the father of Orville and Wilbur Wright, presided over the dedication of the new school and supplied the initial faculty for the college. From the beginning, the school was coeducational and attracted international students from Sierra Leone, Japan, and other countries.

The school offered a liberal arts education that was both classical and progressive. There were courses in applied sciences as well as those aimed at training teachers and ministers. In 1917, the name of the school was changed to Huntington College, becoming a four-year school. A Jewish chemist from Poland established Huntington Laboratories in 1919, a company that eventually became Ecolab.

Like many colleges, the school suffered financial difficulties during the Great Depression and there was a push to close the school in 1932. The decision was made to open as usual that year. Financial difficulties continued with the outbreak of World War II as enrollment dropped to only 28 men and 83 students total by 1942. When the war ended, soldiers returning to take advantage of the G.I. Bill helped grow enrollment.

Huntington College gained university status in 2005. Today, the school is a comprehensive Christian college of liberal arts offering degrees in more than 70 concentrations. The school is consistently ranked highly by Forbes, US News & World Report and the Princeton Review.
