In 1970, the school became an independent institution although it still operated under the University of Maryland System. In 2019, the name of the school became the University of Maryland Global Campus to reflect the school’s expanding global outreach.

Today, the University of Maryland Global Campus is one of the largest providers of distance education in the United States with classes offered both online and on campus.
