About Ferris State University

Ferris State University is a public university known as both Ferris State and FSU. Established as the Big Rapids Industrial School in 1884, it offered classes for local students to give them the skills that employers needed. It became the Ferris Industrial Institute and then the Ferris Institute in 1898. The State of Michigan took over the operations of the institute in 1950 and set aside money to rebuild the campus after a devastating fire destroyed most of the buildings. When the campus reopened, it used the name Ferris State College.

Since becoming FSU in 1987, the university watched both its campus and enrollment grow. Enrollment rose from around 1,000 students in 1950 to more than 14,000 today. The university opened small study centers and extension campuses in 19 cities across Michigan, including Grand Rapids and Lansing. Those centers also offer dual enrollment options for local high school students. Several hundred students also work on their certificates and degrees through the FSU online system.

That accreditation lets students get scholarships from the university and other types of financial aid when they submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
